On September 10, 2012, Walter Koenig was honored with the 2,479th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Cast as Ensign Pavel Chekov almost immediately following an audition for the original Star Trek TV series in 1967, he gained fame for the intergalactic officer’s distinct Russian accent and a striking resemblance to Davy Jones of The Monkees. In addition to numerous other television acting credits, Koenig appeared in seven Star Trek movies before starring on Babylon 5 as Psi Cop Alfred Bester.
With his star located on the same city block as those of George Takei and creator Gene Roddenberry’s and joined by his Starship Enterprise crewmates Mr. Spock, Lt. Uhura and Mr. Sulu (Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei) for the ceremony, Koenig was overjoyed by the recognition from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and appreciative for the legions of Star Trek fans worldwide. This week it was revealed that Star Trek Into Darkness will be the title of the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 franchise reboot; that news, combined with the Walk of Fame accolade, ensures that Star Trek outfits will again be a popular costume idea for Halloween. Join us in celebrating the rich history of this outer space saga by choosing a Star Trek costume for your next disguise event:
“That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” With that brief sentence, NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong secured a place in the annals of history by becoming the first person to set foot on the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. On August 25, 2012 this famed space explorer died in Cincinnati, Ohio at age 82, concluding a long and distinguished life marked by numerous accolades.
Following the celebrated mission, Armstrong and his fellow Apollo 11 crewmates Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. In 1978, Armstrong was given the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by President Jimmy Carter and received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2009. During his life, Neil Armstrong was a Naval Aviator in the Korean War, earned college degrees from Purdue University and USC, flew experimental aircraft as a Test Pilot and shortly thereafter became one of the first civilian astronauts. Armstrong also had three children with his first wife Janet.
The lasting impression of Neil Armstrong and his accomplishments is not easily summated. To many, he is the embodiment of an incredible achievement by America and the scientific community in general in reaching that seemingly unattainable goal of walking on the Moon. His name will remain synonymous with this event and space travel in general, and is deserving of every bit of praise received to this date and still to come. One way to honor this incredible story of perseverance in the face of failure and danger is to keep the ambitions of NASA alive and wear an astronaut suit this Halloween or to any other costume event. Here are a few options to help you boldly go into the unknown like this brave and intrepid soul did so many times before:
Jerry Nelson, legendary puppeteer and voice of beloved characters on Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock as well as films and TV specials featuring The Muppets, passed away at his home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts last night from complications following a long battle with emphysema at age 78. Perhaps best known for his portrayal of the mathematical vampire Count von Count and Herry Monster (both pictured above), his other roles included Sherlock Hemlock, Sgt. Floyd Pepper – bass player for the Electric Mayhem band – and Gobo Fraggle among others.
Join us in paying tribute to a man who helped shape the lives and imaginations of children (and adults) the world over through the wonderfully unique puppets he controlled. As we reflect on the life of Jerry Nelson, celebrate his legacy by wearing a Sesame Street, The Muppets or Fraggle Rock costume this Halloween or at the next disguise occasion.
What would you pay for a piece of original Star Wars memorabilia? For fans of writer/director/creator George Lucas’ world famous space saga, the authentic on-screen cowl headpiece of hirsute Wookiee Chewbacca is, in fact, a cinematic treasure that exceeded expectations and ended up selling for $172,200 at a Profiles in History auction last month. This prized motion picture artifact contains facial features designed by make-up artist Stuart Freeborn, also a designer of Jedi master Yoda‘s unique appearance. Some parts, including the mouth, jaw, nose and teeth had to be reassembled for presentation and the sale while the basis for Chewie’s dark eyes originated from actor Peter Mayhews’ lifecast.
At the same event, a prop blaster gun from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope commanded almost $105,000 (after fees) and a piece of original art that inspired the iconic movie poster from the first film went for nearly $74,000. Pricey possessions indeed, but still only a fraction of what a TIE Fighter model from Episode IV sold at auction in 2005 garnered: $350,000!
You can read more about these one-of-a-kind items in these articles from The Hollywood Reporter and The Huffington Post. Until we win the lottery, we’ll stick to watching the classic films and dressing as our favorite Star Wars characters for Halloween or any other costume occasion!
It seems the Independence Day Spirit has hit some of us a little harder than others. Katie Holmes has recently filed for divorce from her husband of six years, Tom Cruise. Cruise, who recently turned 50, was in Iceland filming his newest movie, the alien thriller Oblivion. Cruise currently stars in Rock of Ages, in which he portrays drunken rock star Stacee Jaxx. Earlier this year, he starred in Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol. Channeling his inner secret agent once more, Cruise is set to star in Jack Reacher, in which he plays a retired military investigator involved in a very fast-paced plot. He just released a trailer for Jack Reacher on July 3rd.
Many have wondered what broke up this love that was supposedly so great Cruise infamously deemed it appropriate to jump up and down on a couch while on live television to profess it. As it happens, Holmes’ reasons were none other than concern for the well-being of the couple’s daughter, Suri. At age six, princess-like Suri has already made headlines for her avant-garde fashion choices, which include wearing a pair of gold heels and a few very Blair Waldorf-esque ensembles (the criteria for such outfits include headbands, fashionable coats, and the perfect purse).
Rumor has it that Tom’s strong religious beliefs interfered with what Katie thinks is best for Suri. Cruise, along with several other celebrities, is a Scientologist, though not all celebrities are in favor of it. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, has described it to be a “very weird cult.” Cruise has some very different views on the religion and it’s been said that he wishes to send young Suri to Sea Organization, a.k.a. Sea Org, which founder L. Ron Hubbard originally created as his own mini-navy that is now land-based. Scientology’s core leaders are all a part of this organization, and those who occupied the ships before they moved to land are considered its clergymen. Those who have high standings in the Scientology/Sea Org circle live by some very strict, military-like rules. Lots of rumors have been going around about unfair and inhumane treatment at Sea Org, some of which even go so far as to mention forced child labor. Alas, there is no actual proof behind these rumors besides speculative stories so their credibility remains somewhat questionable.
But it’s still no wonder that Mama Holmes was a little freaked out by these accusations. However, her and Suri are taking this divorce in stride. The two have been spotted enjoying ice cream together in New York and toting stuffed animals around the city.
