Wrapping Up OSCARS® Loose Ends

The 82nd annual Academy Awards® have come and gone with winners from the big night ranging from war film The Hurt Locker as Best Picture to Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock taking home Leading Actor and Actress, respectively. Mo’Nique and Christoph Waltz’s roles in Precious and Inglourious Basterds earned them Supporting Actress and Actor honors while Hurt Locker filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman in OSCARS® history to win the Directing statue. Avatar’s fantasy world of Pandora was deemed worthy of three awards while Disney’s Up garnered a pair and the dolphin-friendly film The Cove was named Best Documentary Feature. It would seem that everyone but the losing nominees were happy with how the ceremony went, but in the few days that have followed, a number of interesting stories have cropped up about who was snubbed, insulted and in one case, almost prevented from reaching the Kodak Theatre stage after winning one of the trophies.

Film and TV actress Farrah Fawcett, who passed away last year at the age of 62, was omitted from the “In Memoriam” segment of the show, prompting outrage from her family and friends. A representative from the Academy Awards has since come forth to say that a tribute to her at last year’s Emmys was more appropriate, given her fame from such shows as Charlie’s Angels. This morning, Sirius Radio personality Howard Stern unleashed a nasty diatribe against Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe and Oprah Winfrey claiming the actress’ life in show business is effectively over following her Leading Actress loss to Sandra Bullock and that Oprah is a “liar” for telling the 27-year-old she’s “going to have a career.” Finally, there’s the peculiar story of the producers from Music for Prudence, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short. When the film’s name was revealed, producer Roger Ross Williams ran to accept the award, while his 87-year old mother allegedly tried to prevent the other producer Elinor Burkett from making her way to the stage within the 45-second acceptance speech window. As it turns out, the two producers are in the midst of a legal battle surrounding the film, but these circumstances with an elderly Mom blocking the way inside Kodak Theatre are just too bizarre to ignore.

So we’ve assembled a few of our costumes to wear if you want to draw some controversy at the next disguise party, or just acknowledge the movies that won fair and square – including The Young Victoria from our favorite category, Costume Design. Leave it to Hollywood, there’s never a dull moment – on or off the set!

Back to the Future: Captain EO Reopens at Disneyland

Fans of the late King of Pop rejoice!  Michael Jackson’s futuristic movie attraction Captain EO has returned to Disneyland in Anaheim, California.  It’s been 13 years since the 4-D show appeared in Tomorrowland and quite a bit of interest surrounds its revival.

Michael Jackson’s all-too-soon passing last summer was followed by fan requests prompting the Disney theme park to evict “Honey I Shrunk the Audience” and bring back this science-fiction experience.  At 17 minutes long, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by Star Wars creator George Lucas and starring Anjelica Huston alongside MJ himself, the mini-epic has star power to spare.

So, how will you mark the return of this popular immersive show?  If you’re heading to Orange County for a first-hand glimpse at Captain EO, we suggest wearing one of these Space Age Outfits or a classic Michael Jackson Costume to give yourself and other park visitors the full effect.  You’re sure to draw some attention while waiting in line…be sure to practice your Moonwalk ahead of time to complete the look!

Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible

Just in time for Christmas, a new movie about revered author Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed sleuth of London is set to hit the big screen. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the film stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective, Jude Law as his colleague Dr. Watson and Rachel McAdams as Holmes’ former flame Irene Adler. Click the poster below to watch the trailer for Sherlock Holmes.

Robert Downey Jr. has been red-hot since 2008’s Iron Man, even earning an Oscar nomination for his inspired performance in Tropic Thunder, and the preview for Iron Man 2 is generating serious interest well in advance of its May 7, 2010 release date. So, given his recent success with critics and at the box office, we expect his role as the British investigator to be delivered with a similar level of enthusiasm.

Jeter Named S.I.’s Sportsman of the Year!

New York gets to add another #1 to their list this year….

derek

Because the beloved Derek Jeter has been announced as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year!

The Yankee star has had several championships with the franchise and other achievements, but this one is of much significance.

Although this is the 27th World Championship for the Bronx Bombers, this is the first time a Yankee has ever received this award.

Jeter expressed his honor for this award at the official ceremony and stated,

“When you think about being a good sportsman, there’s a lot of things that come to mind, People tell you it’s success on the baseball field, and I think that’s part of it. I also think there’s a lot of qualities that go into it — hard work, dedication, pride, humility. These are all things that I learned at a very young age.”

Well said Jeter….

All this baseball talk has you excited for next season?

Party at the White House?….

President Obama hosted his first state dinner at the White House, honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur….

And while it seemed to be politics as usual for Obama & Co…A Virginia couple managed to pull off arguably one of the best party crashings of all time!

partycrashers

Tareq and Michaele Salahi, of Virginia managed to attend this gala uninvited and undetected..as the couple managed to pass by the Secret Service.

And to top it off…the couple managed to rub some serious elbows…They were fortunate enough to schmooze with Vice President Biden and posted a picture of the trio on their Facebook!

So lesson here is while we are out spending billions of dollars searching for terrorists…an average couple crashes the White House…Makes total sense!

Looking to pull a Salahi at the next White House event…maybe these masks will help..

MJ Lives On… “This Is It”

Last week, Michael Jackson’s documentary, This Is It, debuted in theaters across the globe.

And while its been months since MJ’s untimely passing, it seems as though he is more popular than ever.

MJ_Movie

The film grossed 20.7 million over Halloween weekend, but numbers were lower than what Sony anticipated. However, the film still took the number one spot.

In addition, the two week screening of the movie has been extended to Thanksgiving weekend.

The Chairman of Sony Pictures, Jeff Blake, states,

“In just 5 days, Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT has become the highest grossing concert film of all time and we are elated by the response to this special film by fans, critics and moviegoers from all over the world. With this kind of global response, it’s clear that the motion picture deserves an extended run and we are going to do everything we can to make the film available to everyone who wants to see Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT on the big screen.”

This news is music to MJ fans ears….

So if you haven’t seen the film, be sure to check it out..
