A musical based on the macabre, eponymous Charles Addams cartoons from The New Yorker magazine, The Addams Family debuted on Broadway this week to positively ghoulish reviews from critics. The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter and USA Today all took their shots at the production currently running at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as titular parents Gomez and Morticia. Fortunately for the cast and crew, paying audiences aren’t fazed by this initial wave of negative press as the show is briskly selling tickets through November 2010.
We enjoyed the two Addams Family movies in the ‘90s and are a little disappointed to hear such unfavorable reviews of the stage adaptation but, with a little luck, this live version will shore up its weaknesses and start to impress even the most determined nitpickers in the crowd. Until then, enjoy our offering of “creepy and…cooky, mysterious and spooky” costumes of these gothic characters. Choose from daughter Wednesday, Uncle Fester or the heads of this “altogether ooky” household, Morticia and Gomez. A few unkind words never held the Addams clan back before; show your undying love for this freakish family and their long-awaited appearance on Broadway with a timeless, iconic disguise!
