It’s Time for Your Check-Up: 10 Distinguished Doctor Disguises

Like it or not, planning to attend a costume party has the potential to be traumatic for both adults and kids. How can a fun activity like dressing up in costume lead some to become stressed out? Well, choosing an outfit that tries to beat what you wore last time around can be quite difficult. Imagine being 10 years old and hearing what your friends and classmates are planning to wear and not having any cool or innovative ideas of your own to top them. The same thing happens to adults who can be tagged as boring and unimaginative because of a standard vampire or basic Elvis Presley costume. However, whether you are 9 or 99 years old, you can always dress up in the respected style of a doctor.

While you might think that a doctor has only one look, that’s selling the appearance short. Ideas for doctor costumes are actually rather plentiful, including a variety of traditional medical clothing such as:

1. A Surgical Gown, Cap and Mask combination

2. Hospital Uniform (Green, Blue or any other color)

3. Scrub Uniform

4. Medical Gown or Coat with Stethoscope

5. Isolation gown, head dress and mask

These are only some of the standard possibilities. Choose from the different types of doctors such as a surgeon or pediatrician, among others and add the appropriate accessories. Even without going to medical school, you can be a brain surgeon or the morbid profession of coroner.  Of course, our suggestion is to add some pizzazz and a little touch of horror to the typical doctor ensemble, becoming:

6. Zombie Doctor – The typical costume with bloody and gory props for effect

7. Mad Doctor – Hair raised or spiked, oversized eyeglasses and dark make-up especially around the eyes

8. Medieval Doctor – The look should be like that of a druid with long and flowing robes with totes or bags as props and gruesome surgical tools.

9. Army Doctor – Wear camouflage fatigues with your doctor outfit

10. Famous Movie or Television Doctor Characters. – Some popular fictional TV doctors include Doogie Howser, Doctor Zhivago, Dr. Quinn of Dr Quinn-Medicine Woman, Dr. House M.D., the Grey’s Anatomy cast including Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. “McDreamy” Shepherd, the cast of ER (particularly George Clooney’s Dr. Ross), the cast of Private Practice, Nip/Tuck, or the classic soap opera General Hospital, to name a few.

As you can see, it doesn’t take brain surgery to dress up as a doctor; just inject a little creativity into your costume and you’ll get a clean bill of health along with the admiration of the other party guests.

6 Supremely Seductive Valentine’s Day Costumes

Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14th is the official lovers’ holiday. This sweetheart holiday is marked by giving and receiving cards, flowers, chocolates and jewelry. Valentine’s Day is that special time of year when red and pink colored heart decorations adorn stores and schools and offices, and Valentine cards are delivered with fondness and love. Valentine’s Day lore suggests that this lovers’ holiday was first set in motion as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic Bishop who lived in Rome during the 5th Century and was notoriously beheaded for his commitment to love.

St. Valentine’s life story reads like a Greek tragedy. He served during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius, who believed that married soldiers were unsuitable for military duty, and banned marriage outright. Valentine, a love activist at heart, defied his Emperor and embarked on a crusade of conducting secret marriages. Claudius learned of Valentine’s subversion and had him jailed.

While in jail, he fell in love with a blind woman who was the daughter of the jail warden. During this period, she was blessed by Valentine’s ultimate gift love, and was given the gift of sight. It was widely held that his love for her healed her blindness. Upon learning of this, Claudius ordered his execution. Before his death sentence was carried out, Valentine wrote a farewell message to his beloved, which he concluded with the inscription, “from your Valentine.” Years later by Church decree, Valentine was named the Patron Saint of Love.

The Best Costumes Come In Pairs

Attending costume parties in groups of two can highlight your creativity when you choose outfits that are either identical or come in pairs with slight variation. The easy route is to go as a set of twins, even Siamese twins for that matter (joined at the hip) or well-known couples from TV, movies or celebrity news. On the other hand, if you feel up to challenge, create your own costume duos. Here are some complementary suggestions for costume pairs:

1. G.I. Joe & G.I. Jane – Wear military style jungle outfits and apply camouflage make-up to your face, you’ll be ready for action in no time.

2. The Blues Brothers – Go on a “mission from God” as Jake & Elwood Blues from movie The Blues Brothers. Wear matching dark (preferably black) suits, white shirts, sunglasses and dark colored thin neck ties, and top off the look with a fedora.

3. Barbie & Ken Go to College – For Barbie, wear a color-coordinated cheerleader uniform with pom poms; Ken gets the football uniform, helmet optional.

4. Tweedledee & Tweedledum – Place pillows on your tummies and wear loose pants or short pants with suspenders over them. You can also wear striped long sleeves tucked in your pants then wear caps on your heads. All of the clothes should be identical to mimic these characters from Alice in Wonderland.

5. Evil Twins – Wear matching black or devil style costumes.

6. The Bobbsey Twins – Wear children’s clothes and keep on imitating each other’s actions.

7. Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head – Wear brown sacks, and use fake big ears, big noses and bushy eyebrows. You can make a costume very similar to that of these characters. Refer to the animated film Toy Story for more Potato Head antics.

8. Dr. Evil & Mini-Me – Get a bald wig and wear identical grey Nehru suits as you attempt to defeat Austin Powers. This look is especially effective for parents and children.

9. Fred and George Weasley – From the Harry Potter film and book series, achieve this look with wizard’s clothes and make sure each carries a wand.

10. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde – Wear the costumes of a respected Victorian-era doctor and a hideously deformed monster.

11. Star WarsPrincess Leia & Luke Skywalker – Wear Jedi style clothes and imitate their respective hairdos, particularly the hair buns look of Princess Leia.

12. The Twins from The Matrix – Wear white all over, including your face make-up, the suits, trench coats; long dread lock wigs and matching pairs of cool black shades.

Other popular costumes for pairs include: ketchup & mustard, salt & pepper, bacon & eggs, The Mario Bros. Mario & Luigi, Batman & Robin, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin & Jasmine, Popeye & Olive Oyl, Shrek & Fiona, Neo & Trinity from The Matrix, Fred Flintstone & Barney Rubble or Wilma Flintstone & Betty Rubble, Archie & Jughead, Winnie the Pooh & Piglet, Spongebob Squarepants & Patrick Star, the Statue of Liberty & Uncle Sam, among many others.

6 Splendid School Performance Costume Ideas

School performances are a major highlight for both you and your child during the academic year. This is why many parents and teachers want to make sure that each child is given a memorable role in the production. Two common plays presented by students are stories about our first President George Washington and, during the winter holidays, the Nativity. Of course, there are other plenty of other plays staged throughout the school calendar; find that perfect outfit for your child’s part here:

Costumes for Each Performance Theme:

1. Colonial and Historical costumes – Pilgrims and Native American Indians for Thanksgiving, kings, queens, and medieval knights for a Middle Ages setting, gladiators for Ancient Rome, pirates for a seafaring tale, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Betsy Ross for a Revolutionary War story or Abraham Lincoln, the Confederate officer or Union soldier for a Civil War re-enactment.

2. Religious costumes – Perfect for an Easter play, choose from angels, the Virgin Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Moses, the three Wise Men, shepherds, and animals from the Nativity, among others.

3. Christmas costumes – Similar to religious costumes but can also include Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, the North Pole elves, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the like.

4. Shakespeare-themed costumes – Besides the obviously popular ones like Romeo, Juliet and Julius Caesar other figures are Brutus, King Lear, Hamlet, Rosalind, and the characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, and Much Ado About Nothing.

Disney Princesses and other Animated Favorites –Some of the most famous include Jasmine from Aladdin, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora of Sleeping Beauty, Belle of Beauty and the Beast, animals like Winnie the Pooh, fairies such as Tinker Bell and the Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Mickey Mouse.

6. Broadway Musical-themed costumes – Think of all the characters from shows like Les Miserables, Cats, The Lion King, The King and I, Chicago, A Chorus Line, Hairspray, and Phantom of the Opera, to name just a few from the Great White Way.

Whether you choose to portray a figure from the annals of American history, Biblical tales, one of the classic plays mentioned above or a lively, Disney-inspired outfit, the school performance will undoubtedly improve as your child becomes the character thanks to a well-fitting and detailed costume.
